Summer Research: Thai Monks and Obesity

One of 227 rules for Buddhist monks during ordainment is to eat whatever is set before them by generous worshipers and move slowly and calmly. In Thailand, this is thought to partially explain an uptick in obesity and hypertension among them. The finding is alarming “given the role and influence of monks in society,” report PhD grad Thitipong Tankumpuan, Assistant Professor Nada Lukkahatai, former Dean Patricia Davidson, and a colleague, Thanakrit Jeamjitvibool, in the 2022 Summer Research issue of Johns Hopkins Nursing magazine.

  • Comings and Goings, July 2022

Each month, amazing people both arrive at and depart from the SON. We tend to recognize the newcomers, but sometimes valued employees leave without a public acknowledgement of their service. The SON Human Resources Department would like to change that.

So, as we welcome Research Program Assistant Rashawna Shadae Chambers, Advanced Practice Nursing Clinical Site Coordinator Carla Gourdine, Sr. Administrative Coordinator for Faculty Data and Compliance Kevin Matthews, Postdoctoral Fellow DaJaneil McCree, Research Associate Katherine Ornstein, Community Outreach Specialist Francisco Reyes, Assistant Professor Erin Spaulding, Research Associate Varshini Varadaraj, and Sr. Administrative Coordinator for Recruitments & Contracts Tyra Wilsonwe’d also like to acknowledge the contributions of colleagues and friends like Special Events Manager Matt Casse and Development Coordinator Kaitlyn McKay. Best wishes to all from the SON family.
